Description:
Join Torrey Botanical Society for a hike through Deere Park, one of New York City’s most underrated green spaces. Once slated to become a major highway, it is now one of NYC’s most unique parks. We’ll explore the dramatic topography of the dry serpentine hills, home to what may be the best Chestnut Oak (Quercus montana) forest in the city. Along the way, we will search for the rare Sand Violet (Viola fimbriatula), and Large Field Chickweed (Cerastium velutinum). Cover image by Alan Pieluszynski. We will discuss the fascinating site history and closely examine the striking serpentine geology.
