Jamaica Bay Festival: West Pond Living Shoreline Walk
Want to get outdoors and explore a hidden gem of New York City’s largest open space? Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy for a guided nature tour of the West Pond Living Shoreline project at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. You’ll get an exclusive, up-close look at this innovative shoreline restoration, installed in 2021 by JBRPC, the National Park Service, and the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay. The Living Shoreline is a nature-based solution to the growing challenges of coastal erosion and wetland loss. As you explore the area, Terri Carta, Executive Director of Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, will provide expert insight on how this project has created new habitats and strengthened the resilience of this vital freshwater pond. This tour offers a unique insight into how nature-based solutions can protect coastal environments.
This event is best for ages 14 and up.
Accessibility notes: The walk is on an outdoor trail that passes over gravel and a tidal mud flat. This tour will have special access to the shoreline due to the low tide. No strollers and not wheelchair accessible. The surface is mucky, with sand, water, and silt that is soft underfoot, with some sinking in areas. Wear waterproof shoes that can get wet and muddy.
