Flushing Creek Mega Walk
In collaboration with social practice artist Cody Herrmann and Indigenous artist Tecumseh Ceaser, GoFB is organizing a four-hour walking tour of Flushing Creek in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (FMCP) and Flushing Bay. Join us as we trace the path of our local waterways!
The tour will begin with an Indigenous grounding ceremony led by Tecumseh, framing the event within the context of Indigenous practice. Throughout the tour, participants will learn about the history of Flushing Creek and Flushing Bay, their transformation over the last 100 years, and the potential impacts of different present-day development and restoration proposals. Participants will engage with the water through participatory storytelling, data visualization, and in situ observation.
Location
Participants will meet near Willow Lake inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park. We will share more details closer to the event — stay tuned!
Route
Starting at the source of Flushing Creek, Willow Lake, located at the Southern end of the park, the tour will move up through Flushing Meadows Corona Park to the Creek’s Northern terminus, and Flushing Bay.
The tour will reveal (i.e ‘culturally daylight’) Flushing Creek to park users while engaging participants in the possibility of restoring underground portions of the creek into above-ground habitats (i.e. ‘physical daylighting’), which can have immense benefits for social-ecological health and resilience. We will discuss proposed redevelopment projects, including the Special Willets Point District, the Citi Field Casino (“Metropolitan Park”), and the Special Flushing Waterfront District.
Additional Information
This is a roughly 6-mile route and portions of the walking tour will take place on uneven and/or sandy ground. Please wear appropriate footwear, avoiding open-toe shoes, sandals, and flip-flops. Remember to bring water and sun protection. Lunch will be provided.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature and administered by Flushing Town Hall.
