The Garden Bridge: A New Musical
The Garden Bridge, with libretto by Jill Ohayon and music by Andy Li, is a historical piece that tells the story of a Jewish family and a Chinese family who are forced into the same impoverished neighborhood in Shanghai during World War II. Despite fear-based prejudice, language barriers, and the constant threat of violence, the two families fight to survive and develop relationships with one another in ways that will change them all forever. The Garden Bridge is a story of community, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit.
A one-hour discussion will follow the concert. Featured panelist Gabriel Gruber, who was born in wartime Shanghai, will talk about his parents’ experiences fleeing Vienna and finding refuge in China.
