Dance Creation “Revival 8 Then & Now”

Revival 8: Then and Now is a unique series set to unite legendary pieces from renowned choreographers, creatively inspired by esteemed ex-dancers who once graced their companies. These former dancers, with a deep connection to the original works, will infuse the essence of iconic pieces such as Martha Graham’s “Steps in the Street,” Paul Taylor’s “Esplanade,” and Tina Ramirez’s “Carmen,” into new dance creations tailored for our older adult population. Revival 8: Then and Now finale draws inspiration from Jerome Robbins’ “Dances at a Gathering,” weaving themes of community and unity among groups of dancers.

Founded in 2009 by dancer/choreographer/Artistic Director Naomi Goldberg Haas, Dances for a Variable Population’s, (DVP)’s mission is to promote strong and creative movement among older adults of all abilities, enabling them to build creativity, improve their mental and physical health, strengthen social connections, and enhance quality of life. Our artistic vision is to bring participatory dance experiences and performances to older adults throughout NYC and to train teaching artists to expand our impact across NY and beyond. DVP’s free workshops and public performances promote a democratic, interactive, and inclusive vision of dance that highlights the power and beauty of older bodies.

Revival is a series of annual city-wide performances at Queensbridge Park and Grant’s Tomb in West Harlem in June. Performances in September are at Washington Square Park (West Village), and Yolanda Garcia Park (South Bronx). All Performances serve over 2,500 New Yorkers of all ages. These performances highlight the beauty of the older performer and feature legendary artists and neighborhood older adults from 4 boroughs of NYC. Interactive workshops accompanying the performances engage communities in the power of dance.
