Playwriting Workshop with Arturo Luìz Soria

In this workshop led by playwright and performer Arturo Luíz Soria, participants will explore dramatic storytelling by using personal narratives to create character-driven pieces. Drawing from his expertise as a solo performer, Soria guides participants through unique tools and exercises to draw inspiration from their lived experiences. The workshop encourages participants to write in their mother tongues or the language they feel most comfortable in, aiming to cultivate each writer’s authentic storytelling voice by embracing linguistic diversity. Playwrights Horizons is an Off-Broadway theater that produces world and regional premieres of new plays by living writers.ArturoLuíz Soria is an Obie Award-winning actor and writer. His solo show, Ni Mi Madre, premiered at Rattlestick Theater and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award, Outer Circle Critics Award, a Drama League Award, and the Obie Award for Best Performance. Arturo made his Broadway debut in The Inheritance (Tony Award for Best Play) and was seen off-Broadway in Wet Brain (Playwrights Horizons), Hit the Wall (Barrow Street Theatre), and Ni Mi Madre (Rattlestick Theatre). He’s worked extensively in theatres across the country including The Kennedy Center, Yale Rep, The Guthrie Theater, Dallas Theater Center, Victory Gardens Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Milwaukee Rep, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Studio Theatre, The Inconvenience, and many others. On TV, he can be seen in “Insatiable” (Netflix); “The Blacklist” (CBS); “East New York” (CBS). He holds an MFA from Yale School of Drama, a BFA from The Theatre School at DePaul University, and was part of the inaugural class of TV writers in Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Mentorship Program. Arturo is currently writing a screen adaptation of the novel Bodega Dreams for Black Bar Mitzvah Productions directed by Ángel Manuel Soto.
