A discussion on the publication of Kai Tuchmann’s book Postdramatic Dramaturgies: Resonances between Asia and Europe.

On the occasion of the publication of Kai Tuchmann’s book Postdramatic Dramaturgies: Resonances between Asia and Europe, a discussion between Peter Eckersall, Siting Yang, and Kai Tuchmann on dramaturgical practices in contemporary theatre will be take place at the Goethe-Institut New York.

Tuchmann’s book compiles lectures by the world’s leading practitioners of post-dramatic theatre from East Asia and the German-speaking world, which were given at Asia’s only dramaturgy degree program at The Central Academy of Drama in Beijing 2018/19. This material is complemented by contextualizing essays by the program founder Li Yinan and its co-developer Kai Tuchmann. This rare compilation enables the reader to gain a unique insider’s impression of post-dramatic theatre’s artistic thinking and working methods and informs about its manifold manifestations.

Kai Tuchmann works as a dramaturge, director and academic. As a visiting professor at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, he helped develop the curriculum for the BA Dramaturgy program there. Kai has also researched the history of dramaturgy as a Fulbright Scholar at the Graduate Center of the City University New York, and he is a Fellow of the Mellon School of Theater at Harvard University. In his internationally shown documentary theater works, Kai has explored the afterlife of the Cultural Revolution in contemporary China, the impact of urbanization on migrant workers in Europe and Asia, and the role of the body in the face of digital technologies.

Peter Eckersall teaches in the PhD Program in Theatre and Performance at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and is an Honorary Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne. Recent publications include Okada Toshiki and Japanese Theatre, (ed. with Barbara Geilhorn, Andreas Regelsberger, Cody Poulton, 2021), Curating Dramaturgies (ed. with Bertie Ferdman, 2021), and Performativity and Event in 1960s Japan (2013). He is co-founder/dramaturg of Not Yet It’s Difficult. Recent dramaturgy includes, Sheep #1 (Sachiyo Takahashi, Japan Society), Phantom Sun/Northern Drift (Alexis Destoop, Beursschouwburg, Riga Biennial).

Siting Yang is a playwright, dramaturg, and aspiring scholar from Beijing, based in NYC. She seeks to explore radical aesthetical expressions of individual discontent, resistance, and digression with factual and historical materials. Her recent credits include: Ward No. 6 (Schapiro Theater, New York); HoD (Theaterlab, New York); V.A.B.E.L (Brecht Festival, Berlin and Augsburg). She received her BA at Peking University in German Literature and World History, MFA in dramaturgy at Columbia University, and is continuing her studies towards her PhD in German Literature at Harvard University.
