Golem of Myelz by Dylan Gottlieb — Play Reading
The turn of the twentieth century went unnoticed in Myelovanka — a remote market town in the western reaches of the Russian Empire. Herschel returns from his distant studies with two goals in mind. First, to take over the bookshop of his recently murdered father. Second, to drag the town’s oppressed and conservative Jewish community into the modern era. For Chasha — the woman he left behind — his return presents an opportunity to chase her own vision for the future. Tsarist authorities will struggle against Social-Democratic partisans as the city, and its people, are transfigured by the forward march of history. Shattered hopes, mysticism, and revolutionary ideas will clash in this macabre tragicomedy.
