Theatrical performance “Sun / Blurring Shine”

Hudson Guild Theatre Company presents “Sun / Blurring Shine”, a double bill of plays by Adrienne Kennedy and Zakiyyah Alexander.

Adrienne Kennedy is one of America’s greatest living playwrights, making her Broadway debut this fall with Ohio State Murders. Her fiercely individual and visionary work has been produced on stages around the world for over 50 years. Sun: Dedicated to Malcolm X was first produced in London during the late sixties and is an impassioned, sorrowful reverie about loss, frustration, and hope.

Zakiyyah Alexander graduated from the Yale School of Drama with an MFA in playwriting. Her work has been produced at theatres across the United States and is celebrated with numerous awards. Blurring Shine is her trenchant dissection of the intersection between hip-hop culture and corporate profits, as seen through the eyes of two half brothers at opposite ends of the class system in America.

This double bill is directed by Jim Furlong, Hudson Guild Theatre Company’s artistic director. Set design is by Yizhu Pan, with lighting by Megan L. Peti and costumes by Dan Wang. The cast features Charles Fenner III, Bill Johnson, Omi Ford, and Christopher Regent — all making their company debuts.

Hudson Guild Theatre Company, formed in 1994, brings live theatre to an underserved community of public housing residents in the Elliott-Chelsea and Fulton Houses in Chelsea. Led by professional theatre artists, the Company includes local residents in many aspects of production. HGTC’s outreach programs empower children and youth to explore role options and positive life choices.
