An Indigenous Acknowledgment Earth Day Ride (to Car-Free Lower Manahatta)

Rides bikes down 8 miles of NYC’s famous Broadway from Uptown to the Lower Manhattan on Earth Day paying honor the Native American creators

As our modern metropolis celebrates Earth Day Weekend with 8 special Car-Free Open Streets segments around the city and the encouragement to for NYers to go car-free, our contemporary celebrations should also acknowledge that the Indigenous societies that inhabited the lands known as New York City first modeled how to conduct travel, commerce & have culturally rich lives while respecting the Earth and her destiny as home to future generations.

The Lenape, Canarsie, and Wappinger people’s inhertently sustainable local and interstate foot routes traversed all boroughs and influenced the placement of many modern auto arteries.

Join The Brown Bike Girl for a ride through Manahatta (the Lenape name for the island of Manhattan) along the length of one of the most prolific Indigenous throroughfares in historic and modern New York — Broadway.

Group ride with us to experience the changing neighborhoods on a trip that rarely feels safe to do alone: Appx 8 miles from Uptown at 155th St & Bway down to the Lower Manhattan Car-Free Open Street, ending at Madison Square Park.

Pace: An upbeat 10-12/mph
