Community, Solidarity, Action: Teaching Civics

The New York Public Library plays a leading role in fostering civic engagement and community participation. By enabling community members of all backgrounds to engage each other with ideas, NYPL’s shared community spaces, resources, and collections bring the principle of “We the People” to vibrant life.

Join us this Election Day for a full program of civics-themed professional learning for teachers.

The day will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul. Dr. Cherry-Paul has adapted the #1 New York Times Best Seller Stamped (For Kids).

Teachers will also have the opportunity to attend two sessions including:

  • Community: Civic Arts and Activism — A guided exhibition tour and discussion of the connections between community and art, located in the Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures.
  • Solidarity: Uniting Students in Civics Conversations through Engaging Books — A discussion of new ways to explore the concept of solidarity in the classroom using civics-themed books and activities.
  • Action: “The Great Army of Rent Strikers”: NYC Housing Activism and Reform — A curriculum workshop on using the library’s research collections to examine the relationship between housing justice activism and reforms on the Lower East Side in the early-20th century.

Virtual and in-person attendees will receive classroom resources from all three sessions. In-person attendees will also receive a free copy of Stamped (For Kids).

This program is available for virtual and in-person attendance. Eligible NY State educators can receive 5 CTLE credit hours for participating.

In-person attendance is limited — registration is on a first-come, first serve basis. Light breakfast and boxed lunch will be provided for those attending in person. Please select ONE ticket during registration.
