Strings Masterclass with Violinist Katie Lansdale

Format: Interactive workshop — 60 min. Students do not need to be instrumentalists themselves; and if they are, they do not need their instruments out for these workshops. Musical interactions and learning happen via body motions (breath, percussive sounds, singing) and discussion and Q&A.

During the workshop, Katie will talk about and play a wide range of pieces (for solo violin). Although some of the widely-loved Classical composers are included, Katie shares a number of vibrant, substantial works for violin by composers from under-represented groups. Including Raccoon Talk, a work commissioned from Jerod Tate, a member of the Chickasaw nation.

This event will feature music by a range of wonderful and lesser-heard composers with the next musical generation.

About Katie Lansdale

Katie Lansdale is a professor of violin at the Conservatory. She has performed as a soloist and chamber artist throughout North America, South America, and Europe and as part of numerous concert series, including those of the Phillips Collection, the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater. She has made concerto appearances with the National Symphony, Austin Mozart Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Schroeder Classical Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, New York Spectrum Orchestra, and the New York Repertory Orchestra. Widely acclaimed for solo Bach, Lansdale has performed Bach cycles a dozen times in North and South America. Founder of the Locrian new music group, Lansdale’s extensive chamber music concerts in New York have ranged from appearances at the Mostly Mozart festival at Lincoln Center with Yo-Yo Ma and Merkin Hall with the Twentieth Centuryists to current annual appearances in Carnegie’s Weill Hall (Festival Chamber Music Society). Lansdale has performed for three decades with the Lions Gate Trio, an internationally acclaimed ensemble. Winners of the Koussevitzky Award, the trio has recorded for the Triton and Centaur labels, featuring new American trios, music by Nicolas Bacri, and trios by Schumann, Ravel, Ives, and Rebecca Clarke. Trio residencies have included Tanglewood, Yale University, the University of Pittsburgh, and, currently, the Hartt School.

Lansdale studied with Ronda Cole, Felix Galimir, Josef Gingold, Mitchell Stern, and Donald Weilerstein. She graduated cum laude from Yale, earning both arts and humanities prizes, followed by studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Manhattan School of Music. Having taught Boston University and at SUNY Stony Brook, Lansdale now teaches at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford and at Boston Conservatory.

About Master Classes

A master class is a special opportunity for students and guests to watch and learn from a guest teacher and expert in their area. Guests work with students as a group or one at a time in front of an audience. The guest can engage with students and audiences in a variety of ways, often providing feedback on how to improve their technique, expression, and interpretation.

Guests may also share stories about their experiences such as their career, learning a piece, working with a composer, demonstrating how to play certain passages, and point out common issues and ways to improve.

All spectators and students can benefit from observing a master class and learning master’s teaching and listening to the different versions of the piece.

Master Classes are always free and open to the public to observe.
