Encounter at Farpoint. A Workshop Exploring Climate Change & the Future

Join in this hands-on art workshop with Nancy Nowacek and imagine how climate change will shape the way we live in the future

Encounter at Farpoint* is a workshop with artist Nancy Nowacek to imagine future relationships to flooding and water in Gowanus.

To build a language of possibility, workshops will explore Gowanus’ past relationships with flooding and water, other cities’ relationships to flooding and water, and speculative projects about living with water in new ways.

Participants will engage in a process to envision new, possible—and possibly preposterous—modes of cohabitating with water.

Participants will inscribe their ideas onto blank future-dated front pages of the New York Times, The New York Post, and The Daily News in the forms of headlines, feature images, and/or image captions.

*The name of this project refers to the episode of Star Trek, The Next Generation of the same name in which a character remains wet after falling into a stream simulated by the Holodeck.

About the artist

Nancy Nowacek deconstructs and reimagines social forms and systems. The process is her medium, and play is often a method for interrogation and intervention. Her practice has been focused on embodied knowledge of the built environment. For over 10 years, she has been exploring the New York City waterways as a built environment and researching new forms of access to its public space.
