Storytime with the Author: Hyewon Yum
Food can carry so much history — and author/illustrator Hyewon Yum is joining us with a picture book that shows us just how true that can be.
A Spoonful of the Sea follows a young girl who, instead of the cake that she wanted, is presented with miyeokguk (seaweed soup) for her birthday. She doesn’t want it — that is, until her mother explains the long history of the soup, of the grandmothers and great-grandmothers who have not just made it, but swum in the ocean for the ingredients. It’s a beautifully told and gorgeously illustrated tale that will have you and your young ones thinking of foods and the traditions that surround them in a whole new way.
