A lyrical and affirming ode to Black girls. An ideal next read for fans of I Am Enough and the perfect gift for mothers and daughters, baby showers, and graduation.

Be, Black Girl, Be

Breathe in your truth. And never let anyone dull your shine.

With poetic text and exuberant artwork, this book is a wish from one generation to the next: that every Black girl knows and celebrates her worth.

Dr. Taylor Darks holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Florida State University. She writes stories that she would have loved as a child in hopes of inspiring the next generation of Black girls to feel confident in themselves. When she’s not writing or studying, she’s probably dreaming about Skyline Chili from her hometown of Cincinnati or getting inspired by the antics of her furry sidekicks, Gremlin, Luna, and Nonna. You can visit her online at taylordarks.com.

Sharee Miller is the bestselling illustrator and author of Curlfriends: New in Town. She is also known for her acclaimed picture book Don’t Touch My Hair. Her other picture books include Princess Hair and Michelle’s Garden: How the First Lady Planted Seeds of Change. She is also the illustrator of Sam’s Super Seats by Keah Brown and the Shai & Emmie series by Quvenzhané Wallis. Sharee grew up in Saint Thomas, where she was inspired by the bright colors and sunshine of the Caribbean. She is known for her fresh and cheerful character. Sharee loves creating picture books, graphic novels, and illustrations that depict Black joy.
