Teaching Artistry: A Career for Social Change

To be held in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Parsonnet Room

Join us for a book talk with author and teaching artist extraordinaire Eric Booth promoting his latest title Making Change: Teaching Artists and Their Role in Shaping a Better World. With decades of experience in the field, Booth will share his expertise and advocacy for arts education led by teaching artists who meld their creative practice and teaching skills to inspire students in their arts engagement.

This event will be hosted by Rutgers University-Newark in partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center following the press conference of the Teaching Artist Certificate. This 8-week in-person summer program is supported by both RU-N and NJPAC to train prospective teaching artists not only in the history and background of the vocation but also in teaching skills and business practices to be better equipped in the field. Booth serves as a consultant and facilitator for the Teaching Artist Certificate which is open to Rutgers students and change-of-career individuals who have a creative practice, and artists who require foundations of education, teaching, learning methods, and business knowledge.

Making Change: Teaching Artists and Their Role in Shaping a Better World will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Free light refreshments will be available for attendees.

In 2015, Eric Booth was given the nation’s highest award in arts education, and was named one of the 25 most influential people in the arts in the U.S. He began as a Broadway actor, and became a businessman (his company became the largest of its kind in the U.S. in 7 years), and author of eight books, the most recent is Making Change: Teaching Artists and Their Role in Shaping a Better World and includes the bestseller The Everyday Work of Art. He has been on the faculty of Juilliard (12 years), Tanglewood (5 years), The Kennedy Center (20 years), and Lincoln Center Education (for 41 years). He serves as a consultant for many arts organizations (including seven of the ten largest U.S. orchestras), cities, states, and businesses around the U.S., and in 11 other countries A frequent keynote speaker, he founded the International Teaching Artist Collaborative and the Community Engagement Lab. Eric’s book will be available for purchase at this event. Purchases can be made in CASH only.
