Book Talk “Punished For Dreaming”

The book talk will feature a lively and insightful conversation between Dr. Love and Dr. Deborah Willis, the director of the CBVC and a professor of photography and imaging at NYU. They will discuss the main themes and arguments of the book, which will expose the systemic racism and oppression that Black children face in the U.S. education system, and will offer a radical vision of abolitionist teaching and healing justice.

Dr. Love will share her personal and professional experiences as a Black woman, a scholar, and a co-founder of the Abolitionist Teaching Network (ATN), a grassroots organization that supports educators and parents who fight for educational justice and liberation. She will also highlight the inspiring stories and voices of Black children and youth who resist and transform the oppressive conditions of their schools and communities.

Dr. Willis will praise Dr. Love’s book as a “must-read” for anyone who cares about the future of Black children and the role of education in social change. She will also ask Dr. Love to elaborate on some of the key concepts and strategies in the book, such as abolitionist teaching, educational reparations, Hip Hop education, art-based education, and civic engagement.

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A session, where the audience members will ask Dr. Love various questions about her book, her work, and her advice for aspiring abolitionist teachers and activists. Dr. Love will answer the questions with passion, humor, and wisdom, and will encourage the audience to join the movement for abolitionist teaching and healing justice.

The event will conclude with a book signing, where Dr. Love will autograph copies of her book and chat with the attendees. The book will be available for purchase at the event, and also online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The book talk will be a success and a memorable experience for everyone who participates. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn from and connect with Dr. Bettina Love, one of the most influential and visionary voices in the field of education and social justice.
