Adult Discussion: “Letter from Birmingham Jail”

This event is exclusively available online. Join the Grand Concourse Library staff for a discussion on Martin Luther King Jr.’s renowned “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” composed during his incarceration in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. In this letter, King emphasizes the moral obligation of individuals to defy unjust laws rather than passively awaiting justice that may never materialize. Click on the highlighted words above to access the letter. On the program day, a link to join the discussion will be provided.

Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) served as a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States. As a preacher and the son of a preacher, King advocated for civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance as the most effective means to attain racial equality. His iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, remains one of his most well-known addresses. King was tragically assassinated five years later in Memphis, Tennessee. The federal holiday commemorating his birthday falls on January 15 and is celebrated on the third Monday of every January.
