Made in America Book Talk
Ten years ago, photographer Christopher Payne embarked on a photographic journey to learn more about American manufacturing and the industries that built this country. He has gained access to a world that continues to thrive but is often hidden from view. In Made in America, Chris shows readers an astonishing range of how things are made, from yarn in a traditional New England textile mill to a rocket made with the world’s largest 3-D printer—and every sort of manufacturing in between.
Join OHNY and The General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen for a conversation with Chris about his experience creating Made in America. This talk will spotlight stories and stunning photographs of New York-based manufacturers including Steinway & Sons pianos, M&S Schmalberg fabric flowers, Epner Technologies, which plates Oscar statuettes, MTA subway repair facilities, and the New York Times printing plant.

About the General SocietyThe General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen of the City of New York was founded in 1785 by the skilled craftsmen of the City. Today, this 238-year-old organization continues to serve and improve the quality of life of the people of the City of New York through its educational and cultural programs, including its tuition-free Mechanics Institute, The General Society Library, and its nearly two-century-old Lecture Series. The Society also houses the unique John M. Mossman Lock Collection, which has more than 370 locks, keys, and tools, dating from 2000 B.C. to the early 20th century. The General Society of Mechanics & Tradesmen is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the façade of the building is a New York City Landmark.
