It’s time to grab your backpacks and lunch boxes, your fresh gel pens and blank notebooks, and join us for a special back-to-school storytime with Dan Saks, reading from his newest board book WE SHARE THIS SCHOOL, and Joshua David Stein, reading from his much-loved book LUNCH FROM HOME.

We Share This School:

A rhyming, heartfelt celebration of school communities and the vital role they play in young children’s lives.

“A charming introduction to the big idea of school, and an angle that will resonate: it’s not the building but the people that make up a school.” —School Library Journal

This formative board book is an appreciation of school communities and the many ways in which they help develop empathy, compassion, and collective responsibility. Through a handful of specific yet universal school scenarios, young readers will understand what it means to be a part of a school community and celebrate how to share with and care for one another.

Lunch From Home:

What happens when a child’s favorite packed lunch is met with disparaging comments at the school lunch table?

In a classroom of sandwiches, four students stand out with their homemade, culturally specific lunches. But before they can dig in and enjoy their favorite foods, their lunches are spoiled by scrunched noses and disgusted reactions from their sandwich-eating classmates.

Follow each of the four students as they learn to cope with their first “lunch box moments” in this picture book that encourages empathy and inspires all readers to stand up for their food! Inspired by the “lunch box moments” of four acclaimed chefs, Ray Garcia, Preeti Mistry, Mina Park, and Niki Russ Federman, this heartwarming story reminds us all that one’s food is a reflection of self and an authentic celebration of culture.

Dan Saks is a musician, music educator, and the author of a bestselling board book series about families. He has lived and taught in New York City, Mexico City, and Switzerland and has traveled the world as a performing musician. He currently lives with his wife and two daughters in Brooklyn, New York, where he produces Noodle Loaf, a popular music education podcast for kids. His newest book, We Share This School, is the first book in a three-book series about communities.

Joshua David Stein is a writer and editor. Among his adult books are Notes from a Young Black Chef and My America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef, with Kwame Onwuachi; The Nom Wah Cookbook, with Wilson Tang; and Il Buco: Stories & Recipes, with Donna Lennard. Can I Eat That?, Brick: Who Found Herself in Architecture, The Ball Book, The Invisible Alphabet, and, most recently, Solitary Animals. He lives in Brooklyn with his two sons.
