Picture Books to Treasure

These sweet titles are full of heart! In this panel, we’ll get a gentle lesson on the different ways we connect, then enjoy a fun and splashy day at the community pool, and then meet a sweet little girl who befriends an even littler octopus, then follow a family heirloom around the world and back, as well as hear a humorous tale about a new school librarian who shows her students that change can be fun!

Join us for:

  • Same Love, Different Hug by ABBEY BRYANT. Some people love a big, strong hug. Others like a gentle hug. Some don’t like to hug at all — they like to shake hands instead. Same Love, Different Hug is a gentle picture book that looks at how different people connect and navigate boundaries, modeling social-emotional skills for the youngest among us.
  • The Brilliant Ms. Bangle by CARA DEVINS. It’s a new school year, and something is different. The students’ beloved librarian, Ms. Stack, has retired. The new librarian, Ms. Bangle, is not the same! She has different ways of doing, well, everything! How will the students ever adjust? Change isn’t easy, but it can be a positive experience. With a bit of patience and a lot of heart, it can be positively brilliant.
  • Our Pool by LUCY RUTH CUMMINS. A celebration of community, of diversity, of staying cool! It’s a very hot day in the city and children (and their adults) gather from all over to come together in a very special place. The pool is a space everyone can come to cool off, play with friends, and enjoy the day. The book is full of tender parent-child moments that complement the excitement of a wonderful day at the pool.
  • Out of the Blue by NIC YULO. Coral has big dreams about grand adventures — but it’s hard to go after these big dreams when you’re the smallest in the class and feel completely invisible. During a school trip to the aquarium, Coral finds a kindred spirit in Kraken, a small octopus who knows that being invisible isn’t always a bad thing.
  • The Blue Glass Heart by YONA ZELDIS McDONOUGH. A beautiful story of a family heirloom that comes to play a role in many lives. When Sarah accidentally breaks Bubbe’s blue glass bowl, she sets a heart-shaped piece of blue glass on an adventure, touching the lives of children around the world, until it finally — remarkably — finds its way back home.
