Author Talk. Kate Walter. Behind the Mask: Living Alone in the Epicenter
Join Hudson Park Library in welcoming the local author Kate Walter as she discusses her inspiring new memoir in essays “Behind the Mask: Living Alone in the Epicenter.”
The book details her life at Westbeth Artists Housing in the West Village during the pandemic. Before the lockdown, Westbeth was jumping with activity; then it turned into a ghost town. Writing became Kate’s salvation, and she will share the experiences and reflections she recorded that led her to a new perspective of gratitude.
After the reading, Kate, who taught creative writing at NYU for 30 years, will lead free writing exercises she designed to help people heal and record their pandemic experiences.

Kate Walter is the author of Looking for a Kiss: A Chronicle of Downtown Heartbreak and Healing. Her essays and opinion pieces have appeared in The New York Times, Newsday, New York Daily News, AM-NY, Next Avenue, and many other outlets. She taught writing at NYU and CUNY for three decades. Walter has documented her life in downtown Manhattan since 1975. She has been dubbed “that world’s Samuel Pepys.”
