Lecture “Understanding Haiti Today: an Historical Approach”

Please join us for a candid conversation looking back on Haiti’s rich history as the first independent Black republic and the country’s complex relationship with France and the United States. Dr. Laurent Dubois, Professor of History at Duke University, Co-Director of the Haiti Lab, and Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, Vice-President of News Programming at NICK NEWS, LFNY alum, and parent, will discuss how Haiti’s past has informed Haiti’s present.

All attendees must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

About the guests

Award-winning journalist Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson became Vice President of News Programming and Executive Producer of NICK NEWS at Nickelodeon in October 2020. Prior to joining Nickelodeon, she worked for 60 MINUTES, America’s most-watched news program, for 16 years. Laguerre-Wilkinson has reported from the far corners of the world and covered domestic stories including Hurricanes Katrina in New Orleans and Sandy in New York. Her Haitian roots have made her an invaluable producer on CBS News coverage of the country, including an Emmy-winning 60 MINUTES report on the deadly earthquake there in 2010. Before joining 60 MINUTES, she worked as an associate producer and producer for anchorman Tom Brokaw at NBC News. The native New Yorker lives in Manhattan with her husband, Bruce, and their daughters, Juliette and Joséphine.

Laurent Dubois is a specialist on the history and culture of the Atlantic world who studies the Caribbean (particularly Haiti), North America, and France. Professor Dubois joined the University of Virginia in January 2021. Before coming to UVA, Dubois spent a decade at Duke University, where he founded the Forum for Scholars & Publics and taught as a professor of romance studies and history. He is the author of seven books, including A Colony of Citizens: Revolution and Slave Emancipation in the French Caribbean, 1787-1804 (2004), which won the Frederick Douglass Prize and three other book prizes. His 2012 book, Haiti: The Aftershocks of History, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Dubois holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and history from the University of Michigan (1998) and completed his B.A. in anthropology and English at Princeton University.

During his visit, Pr. Laurent Dubois will also be giving the 8th graders a special lecture on Haiti’s history, as part of their history curriculum.
