Lecture “History at Plymouth Church: Nancy Koester, Harriet Beecher Stowe”
Join us for the latest installment in the Henry Ward Beecher Lecture Series at Plymouth Church, hosted by the Church’s History Ministry.
In this free lecture, open to the public, author Nancy Koester explores the compelling story of Harriet Beecher Stowe, a woman who dared to tell the truth about slavery, the subject of Koester’s book Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Spiritual Life.
Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, converted thousands to the anti-slavery cause. It also won her fierce enemies and harsh critics. Using fiction based on fact, Stowe exposed slavery as a system based on lies, driven by greed, and enforced by cruelty. Her protest novel became the bestseller of the century. More than mere entertainment, this was a cry for justice.
This lecture is free and open to the public.
Doors open at 6:30 PM. The lecture begins at 7:00 PM.
The event takes place in the Reception Room of Plymouth Church, accessible via Orange Street.
