Lecture “A Public Health Approach to Violence”

About the event

This presentation will cover the public health lens through which Dr. Piquero has studied crime and violence, especially domestic and gun violence, before/during/after the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the speaker

Dr. Alexis R. Piquero serves as Acting Chair of Sociology and Criminology, Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminology, and Arts & Sciences Distinguished Scholar at the University of Miami in Florida. He was appointed in June 2022 by former President Biden to serve as the Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

A leader in the field of criminology, Dr. Piquero’s studies focus on the intersection of race/ethnicity and crime, criminal justice policy and crime prevention, and criminal careers; focusing on quantitative methodology. He has also studied domestic and gun violence during, before, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Piquero has served on several National Academy of Sciences Panels, including Modernizing the Nation’s Crime Statistics and Evaluating the National Institute of Justice. In 2019, Dr. Piquero earned the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Bruce Smith, Sr. award for his exceptional contributions in the field of criminal justice and in 2020 the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Division of Developmental & Life-Course Criminology of the American Society of Criminology. He served as the editor of the Journal of Quantitative Criminology and the Justice Evaluation Journal.

This lecture will be on the CUNY SPH campus, but those who are unable to attend in person will be able to tune in to a livestream of the lecture via Zoom. All registrants should RSVP. Virtual attendees will receive the livestream link after registering.
