Abstract: We are living in the Anthropocene. The climate is changing and we are in the midst of a global mass extinction event. Transformative, systems-oriented changes are urgently needed to address these crises. Artificial intelligence—if applied strategically—can help us to understand these complex problems and dramatically accelerate the pace of solutions. In this talk, I will present findings from the Landscape Assessment of AI for Climate and Nature report, providing a high-level overview of key concepts and highlighting use cases of AI for climate action and sustainable development across various sectors. I will also discuss the key considerations for ensuring that AI development is equitable, safe, and sustainable, specifically for applications in the Global South and historically marginalized communities. Finally, I will explore the opportunities and enablers for transformative change.
