Urban Science Innovators Series: Solomane Sirleaf of NYC OTI

NYU CUSP is pleased to host our Innovators Series, featuring the achievements and groundbreaking work of our partners in their respective industries. The series highlights the impact these partners are making and inspires students to think creatively about their career paths. In this session, we’ll hear from Solomane Sirleaf.

About the Speaker

Solomane Sirleaf is a Senior Urban Infrastructure Monitoring Engineer at the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (NYC OTI). At NYC OTI, his team manages and monitors all of New York City’s Urban resources through the use of technology and policy instruments.

In Solomane previous role at NYC OTI, he worked as a Data Engineer. In this role, he served as the team Technical Lead for the deployment of New York City’s $5.4 million 311 Re-Architecture project. The 311 Re-Architecture project enabled the 311 Customer Call Center to deliver a more customer-centric, cost-effective, and efficient system to New York City’s 8.6 million residents.

Solomane holds a Master’s degree in Applied Urban Science & Informatics from NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP); and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from CUNY’s Bernard M. Baruch College.

How to align the gap between education and career goals: Data Engineering in Perspective

In this lecture, we will discuss how to align your education with your career goals. As we are aware the primary objective of CUSP is career preparation. And for most students, this seems to be the goal.

We are also aware that the central focus of the CUSP program is on the use of technology in government. In this presentation, we’ll examine this further to identify any gaps and how students can fill these gaps. The focus of this lecture would be on Data Engineering as a career goal.

Data Engineering is the process of extracting, transforming, and loading of data into a data warehouse. These loaded datasets are used to build an actionable insight into the happening of citizens’ or customers’ behavior.

But are we equipped with the resources to work as a Data Engineer in government? Come to this lecture series as we take a deep dive into this topic and learn from a Senior Urban Infrastructure Monitoring Engineer of the New York City government.
