Barkley Hendricks. Art Lecture with Robert Bunkin

This session of Art Talk will focus on the work of Barkley Hendricks, b. Philadelphia, 1945 — d. New London, Conn. 2017. His recent exhibition at the Frick Madison juxtaposed a group of his portrait paintings with works by historic artists in the Frick’s permanent collection. This talk will explore Hendricks’s relationship with European Old Master Portraits. The Frick was one of Hendricks’s favorite museums, which he visited whenever he was in NYC. He also discovered the work of Giovanni Battista Moroni (c. 1520 — 1580) during his first visit to Europe, at the Uffizi in 1966. Hendricks decided to focus on what was missing: life-size portraits depicting people of African descent. His work blazed a trail for later artists, such as Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald.

Robert Bunkin is a painter, curator, art historian, and educator, with a BS from CUNY and an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. He has taught art history and studio art in several NYC art schools, universities, colleges, and museums.
