Barringer Lecture

On Friday, February 11, 2024, the Lawrence Historical Society will host the first Barringer Lecture, a lectureship established in honor of Ruth Barringer, a longtime member and former trustee of the society. The lecture will be held at the Lawrence High School auditorium and will be free and open to the public.

Ruth Barringer was a native of Wilmington, Delaware, who moved to Lawrence in 1961 with her late husband Don. She was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Lawrence Historical Society in 1987 and served until 2022. She was instrumental in the fundraising and restoration of the Brearley House, the 1761 brick farmhouse that serves as the headquarters of the society. She was also involved in various historical and civic organizations, such as the Lawrence Township Historic Preservation Advisory Committee, the D&R Canal Watch, and the Lawrenceville Point Homeowners Association.

The Barringer Lecture aims to provide a forum for public education and dialogue on issues of local history, culture, and society, and to showcase the scholarship and achievements of historians and researchers in the field. The inaugural lecture will feature Dr. James Goodman, a professor of history and creative writing at Rutgers University-Newark, and the author of several books, including Stories of Scottsboro, Blackout, and The Devil and Mr. Casement. Dr. Goodman will present his latest research on the history of the Lawrenceville School, one of the oldest and most prestigious boarding schools in the country, and its relationship with the surrounding community.

The lecture will be an enlightening and engaging event that will attract a large and diverse audience of students, teachers, residents, and guests. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session, where Dr. Goodman will answer questions from the audience and engage in a lively and thoughtful dialogue.
