Opening Lecture: Artist Helen Glazer

Come and join us at the Kelley Theatre in the Quick Center for the Arts for an engaging presentation by artist Helen Glazer as she introduces her exhibition, “Walking in Antarctica!” This talk is part of the Edwin L. Wiesel Jr. Lectureships in Art History, generously funded by the Robert Lehman Foundation. Additionally, the lecture will be available for streaming on thequicklive.com.

In 2015, Helen Glazer embarked on a journey to Antarctica as a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. Her mission was to capture images of ice and geological formations for future use in photographic prints and sculptures. Working from remote Antarctic scientific field camps and gaining access to protected areas requiring government permits or the company of a skilled mountaineer, Glazer’s experiences laid the foundation for her immersive interdisciplinary exhibition, “Walking in Antarctica.”

This exhibition seamlessly combines photography, sculpture, and audio narrative to transport the audience through the extraordinary landscapes of remote regions seldom reached by tourist ships. The project is organized as a series of virtual “walks” through remarkable Antarctic scenes, including frozen lakes, towering glaciers, baroque sea ice formations, a stunning ice cave, surreal boulder fields, and a lively colony of nesting Adélie penguins. For those attending with smartphones, an audio tour narrated by Glazer, derived from her recorded blog experiences, will be available.

Through her art, Glazer aims to convey the marvels and intricacies of the natural world, inspiring a collective desire to preserve and protect these wild spaces. Her extensive study of earth science has heightened her awareness of the various factors shaping the land over time, emphasizing the interconnectedness of geology, climate, life forms, and human activity in a given location.

This project, organized by Mid-America Arts Alliance, is an adaptation of the artist’s solo exhibition held at the Rosenberg Gallery at Goucher College in Baltimore, MD, titled “Walking in Antarctica.” The original exhibition received support from grants provided by the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance and the Puffin Foundation. The creation of this work was made possible, in part, by a Rubys Artist Project Grant from the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, with funding from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, and a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant.
