Lecture of Silvia Federici

Join us for a lecture featuring the esteemed scholar and activist Silvia Federici as she explores the interconnections between war, social reproduction, and the ongoing anti-capitalist feminist struggle. Drawing on her extensive research in political philosophy, feminist theory, cultural studies, and economics, this presentation delves into critical concepts that continue to shape contemporary discourse in the arts.

Silvia Federici, born in 1942 in Parma, Italy, stands as one of the most influential theorists of her generation. In 1972, she co-founded the International Feminist Collective (IFC) and led its New York Committee. The IFC initiated the Wages for Housework campaign, utilizing labor union strategies like the general strike to highlight gendered, unpaid care work. The campaign advocated for women’s healthcare, reproductive rights, and the decriminalization of sex work, setting a precedent for ongoing discussions on the socio-sexual division of labor, sexuality as work, power dynamics among women, and the intersectionality of these struggles. Federici has actively participated in the anti-globalization and anti-death penalty movements. Her notable works include “Revolution at Point Zero” (2012), “Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body, and Primitive Accumulation” (2004), “A Thousand Flowers: Social Struggles Against Structural Adjustment in African Universities” (2000, co-editor), and “Enduring Western Civilization: The Construction of Western Civilization and its ’Others’” (1994, editor). Federici currently holds the position of Professor Emerita of Political Philosophy and International Studies at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The event is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity to engage with profound insights that shape our understanding of contemporary art.
