Slide Lecture On The Loft Generation
On Wednesday, May 10 at 8 PM, Jacob Burckhardt will give a slide lecture on “The Loft Generation: From the de Koonings to Twombly: portraits and sketches, 1942-2011” (Farrar Strauss Giroux, 2021) by Edith Schloss (his mother).
It will center on the illustrations, especially those that (for reasons of space) did not get in the book, plus images of her work.
The occasion is the book’s paperback release.
Jacob Burckhardt Bio
All the while making underground movies, Jacob Burckhardt has worked at a variety of jobs: blueberry picker, steel mill laborer, grape harvester, Fuller Brush man, truck driver, taxi driver, camera repairman, and freelance photographer. As an audio engineer, his work in sound ranges from recording audio around the world to mixing soundtracks for independent films at a midtown studio. He now teaches in the Film/Video department at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. After making two feature movies in the 1980s, he went back to making shorts, in 16-millimeter film and video, where it is possible to preserve a direct relationship between the film and the filmmaker.
He enjoys collaborating with Douglas Dunn, and they are currently shooting a movie called “Disappearances.”
In 2010, after listening to Edith Schloss tell her stories many times he made a documentary with her, A Guided Tour of Edith’s Apartment. After her passing in 2011, publishing her memoir, The Loft Generation, was a major project but totally worth it.
