Annual Barra Ó Donnabháin Lecture “Áine Ní Churráin”

As RTÉ’s Irish language radio service Raidió na Gaeltachta celebrates 50 years on the air, join us for the annual Barra Ó Donnabháin Lecture featuring longtime RnaG journalist Áine Ní Churráin. Áine recently retired from Raidió na Gaeltachta after 40 years of service. She will discuss her broadcast career and the impact of RnaG on the Gaeltacht and the Irish-speaking community.

Áine originally hails from Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht. She began working with RnaG in 1980, presenting the lifestyle program Líon Tí. In her long career, she worked as a presenter and producer on a myriad of news and magazine programs.

Áine’s acclaimed program Barrscéalta first aired in 1996. She continued to inform, debate, and delight her listeners with her unique style until her retirement in 2020. Áine was the recipient of the 2020 Oireachtas Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes excellence in the Irish-language media sector.

The Barra Ó Donnabháin Lecture was established in 2006 in honor of the beloved and influential teacher and language advocate, originally from Leap, Co. Cork. He emigrated in 1963 after graduating with a degree in Irish and Latin from University College Cork. He was, for many years, a columnist with the Irish Echo. Past speakers include former Ambassador Dan Mulhall, Louis De Paor, Breandán Mac Suibhne, Máire Ní hAnnracháin, Alan Titley, and Nuala Ní Domhnaill.
