Lecture “The American Colonization Society: Back to Africa vs American Inclusion...”
Formed in 1816 during a time of racial unrest, the American Colonization Society, with support from some Supreme Court justices, members of Congress, and U.S. presidents such as Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, believed that freed enslaved people could not integrate into American society, and thus ought to seek their destiny in Liberia. This notion was opposed by abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and James McCune Smith.
Join us for a lecture/discussion with Dr. William Seraile on the history of the back to Africa movement as it relates to U.S. History, Haitian emigration, and the vision of Marcus Garvey for Africans at home and abroad.
