Regional State Forum “Decriminalizing Mental Illness and Addiction”
From Punishment to Public Health (P2PH) is partnering with the NYC Justice Peer Initiative and the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS) to host a regional state forum highlighting key issues at the intersections of mental health, substance use, housing insecurity, and criminal legal system involvement. With the recurrent tropes of “dangerous mentally ill” homeless people in need of forced removal and coerced treatment, this event is designed to cultivate discussion around investment opportunities to fill gaps in services and create a more integrated behavioral health system that meets the needs of New York City’s most vulnerable residents.
Participants may join in person at the college or online via Zoom.
Speakers will include:
- Helen “Skip” Skipper, Executive Director, NYC Justice Peer Initiative
- Steve Coe, Social Justice Policy Collective
- Casey Dalporto, Senior Policy Attorney, New York County Defender Services
- Harvey Rosenthal, CEO, NYAPRS
- Luke Sikinyi, Public Policy Director, NYAPRS
- Jeff Coots, P2PH Director
