Lecture “Memory, Mass Mourning, and the Medical Humanities”

Exploring how we remember and memorialize mass trauma through a multidisciplinary look at collective grief.

While grief is an inevitable part of the human experience, a unique complexity arises when loss is universal. This multidisciplinary session asks: what happens when “everyone” is grieving together, and how is that remembered, individually and collectively? Drawing on the diverse perspectives of the medical humanities, our panel will examine how society memorializes mass trauma — from historic and recent pandemics to the scars of war and 9/11. We will explore how these events shape memory, impact healthcare professionals, and influence the ways we formally mark shared tragedy.
