Classic Movie “Hello, Dolly!” (1969)
In Yonkers, New York, in the late 1890s, the formidable and beloved widowed matchmaker Dolly Levi travels to meddle in the affairs of the wealthy, miserly “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder. While hired to find him a wife, Dolly secretly intends to marry Horace herself. Her scheming sets in motion a chaotic day for everyone: she sends Horace’s niece, Ermengarde, and her suitor, Ambrose, to New York City; persuades Horace’s chief clerk, Cornelius Hackl, and his assistant, Barnaby, to also go to the city for an adventure; and arranges for Horace to meet the lovely widow Irene Molloy, who is secretly the object of Cornelius’s affection. The ensuing adventure in New York involves mistaken identities, frantic hideaways, a fancy dinner at the Harmonia Gardens restaurant, and a spectacular parade, all leading to multiple romantic couplings and Dolly’s triumphant return to society, ultimately teaching the grumpy Horace a lesson in generosity and the joy of living.
