Thursday Night Movies “Swing Time” (1936)

Fred Astaire stars as John “Lucky” Garnett, a charismatic but perpetually late gambler and dancer who is about to marry Margaret Watson (Betty Furness). When his fellow performers in a stage show doubt his commitment, Lucky vows to prove them wrong by going to New York City to earn $25,000 to appease her wealthy father. His quest is immediately complicated when he meets Penny Carroll (Ginger Rogers), a beautiful and talented dance instructor. A series of comic misadventures, orchestrated by Lucky’s loyal friend Pop (Victor Moore), continually prevents him from making his fortune but throws him repeatedly into Penny’s path. Despite her initial annoyance and her engagement to another man, an undeniable romantic and rhythmic spark ignites between them. The film builds to its legendary climax through a series of now-iconic musical numbers, including the Oscar-winning song “The Way You Look Tonight” and the breathtaking “Bojangles of Harlem” solo, culminating in a final, spectacular dance performance where Lucky and Penny must choose between duty and love.
