Thursday Afternoon Films “Picnic” (1955)

Based on the William Inge play, the 1955 film Picnic is set in a small Kansas town over a Labor Day weekend. The arrival of a charismatic but down-on-his-luck drifter, Hal Carter (William Holden), disrupts the quiet community. His presence stirs longing and discontent, particularly in the Owens household, where beautiful but aging schoolteacher Madge (Kim Novak) is tired of being valued only for her looks and dreams of a more passionate life, while her younger, intellectual sister, Millie (Susan Strasberg), feels overlooked. Hal’s rough charm and boastful tales of a brighter future captivate Madge, inflaming the jealousy of her steady, wealthy boyfriend, Alan (Cliff Robertson), and drawing the wary attention of their lonely neighbor, spinster schoolteacher Rosemary (Rosalind Russell). The simmering tensions of repressed desires and societal expectations explode at the town’s annual picnic, leading to consequences that forever change all their lives.
