Greg Gaines is a high school senior whose sole survival strategy is to remain anonymously friendly with every social clique without ever committing to one. His only true friend is Earl, a gruff co-worker with whom he makes amateurish parodies of classic films. Greg’s carefully constructed detachment is shattered when his mother forces him to befriend Rachel Kushner, a classmate recently diagnosed with leukemia. Reluctant at first, Greg finds his friendship with Rachel deepening genuinely as he and Earl begin to make a film specifically for her.
