Summer Film Screening “Wet Hot American Summer” (2001)
It’s the last day of the season at Camp Firewood in the summer of 1981, and every counselor is desperately trying to resolve their crises before the big farewell dance. The camp’s director, Beth, is having an affair with a local astrophysicist to help him prevent a piece of NASA’s Skylab from crashing into the camp. Meanwhile, head counselor Andy pursues the uninterested bookish counselor, Katie; a talented young performer, Ben, grapples with his insecurities; and a camp-wide talent show is organized to raise money to save a starving kid in the city. All the while, a group of delinquent campers led by the rebellious Gene run amok, creating chaos that the counselors are almost entirely too self-absorbed to notice. The film is a chaotic, absurd, and affectionate parody of the teen sex comedies and summer camp movies of the 1980s.
