Set in 1935 Texas, The Great Debaters follows the inspiring true story of Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington), a passionate professor at Wiley College, a historically Black institution. Tolson coaches the school’s debate team, composed of brilliant students including James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker), Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett), and Henry Lowe (Nate Parker), as they challenge racial injustice and societal norms through the power of words. Facing discrimination and personal struggles, the team overcomes adversity to compete against elite universities, culminating in a groundbreaking showdown with Harvard.
