Monday Night Movies “The Picture of Dorian Gray” (1945)
Based on Oscar Wilde’s novel, the film follows the handsome and wealthy Dorian Gray, who becomes the subject of a striking portrait painted by his friend Basil Hallward. Under the influence of the cynical Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian makes a Faustian bargain, wishing that the portrait would age instead of him, allowing him to indulge in a life of hedonism and vice without consequence. As Dorian descends into corruption, his portrait grotesquely reflects his moral decay, while his outward appearance remains untouched. Haunted by his choices and the deteriorating painting, Dorian must confront the consequences of his vanity and immorality.
