Saturday Afternoon Movie “The Women” (1939)
This classic comedy-drama, directed by George Cukor, follows the lives of a group of wealthy Manhattan socialites as they navigate love, betrayal, and friendship. When Mary Haines (Norma Shearer) discovers her husband is having an affair with the scheming Crystal Allen (Joan Crawford), her seemingly perfect life unravels. With the help — and sometimes hindrance — of her gossipy friends, including the sharp-tongued Sylvia Fowler (Rosalind Russell), Mary must decide whether to fight for her marriage or reclaim her independence. The film, notable for its all-female cast and witty dialogue, offers a satirical yet poignant look at women’s relationships and societal expectations in the 1930s.
