Thursday Afternoon Films “The More the Merrier” (1943)
Directed by George Stevens, “The More the Merrier” is a romantic comedy set in Washington, D.C., during the WWII housing shortage. Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur), a practical young woman, reluctantly rents half of her apartment to the charming but mischievous retiree Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn). When Dingle secretly sublets part of his space to the handsome Sergeant Joe Carter (Joel McCrea), chaos and romantic entanglements ensue. Despite Connie’s initial frustration, a playful love triangle develops, with Dingle playing matchmaker between her and Joe. Filled with witty banter, slapstick humor, and heartwarming moments, the film culminates in a madcap chase as Connie and Joe finally confess their feelings, proving that sometimes, the more, the merrier.
