Thursday Afternoon Films “Sullivan’s Travels” (1941)

“Sullivan’s Travels” (1941), directed by Preston Sturges, is a satirical comedy-drama about Hollywood director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea), famous for making lighthearted comedies but determined to create a serious, socially significant film about human suffering. To gain firsthand experience of hardship, he disguises himself as a homeless tramp and embarks on a journey across America, accompanied by a struggling actress (Veronica Lake). His idealistic adventure takes unexpected turns — landing him in real poverty, mistaken identity, and even a brutal chain gang — before he ultimately learns the true value of laughter and escapism in difficult times.

Blending sharp wit with heartfelt social commentary, “Sullivan’s Travels” is both a critique of Hollywood pretension and a celebration of comedy’s power to uplift the human spirit.
