Monday Night Movies “Cluny Brown” (1946)
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, “Cluny Brown” is a whimsical romantic comedy set in pre-World War II England. The film follows the free-spirited Cluny Brown (Jennifer Jones), an irrepressible plumber’s niece who doesn’t conform to societal expectations, much to the dismay of her uncle and the upper-class households where she finds work when she’s sent to work as a maid at the estate of Sir Henry Carmel (Reginald Owen), her unconventional behavior — including her habit of fixing sinks and speaking her mind — charms Adam Belinski (Charles Boyer), a witty Polish refugee and intellectual hiding from the Nazis. As Cluny’s unpretentious nature disrupts the rigid British class system, a playful romance blossoms between her and Belinski, culminating in a delightfully subversive ending that celebrates individuality over tradition.
