Directed by Henry Koster and based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “Flower Drum Song” is a vibrant romantic comedy set in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The story follows Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki), a young woman who arrives as an arranged bride for nightclub owner Sammy Fong (Jack Soo), only to discover he loves showgirl Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). Meanwhile, idealistic Wang Ta (James Shigeta) struggles between his traditional father’s expectations and his desires, eventually falling for Mei Li. Filled with dazzling musical numbers, cultural clashes, and lighthearted humor, the film explores themes of generational conflict, assimilation, and love in a changing Chinese-American community.
