A special International Workers’ Day screening of “9 to 5” (1980)
Directed by Colin Higgins and starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton, “9 to 5” is a satirical workplace comedy about three female office workers who take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Dabney Coleman). Judy (Fonda), a newly divorced woman, Violet (Tomlin), a widowed supervisor passed over for promotions, and Doralee (Parton), Hart’s wrongly maligned secretary, bond over their shared frustrations with workplace discrimination. After a series of humiliations, they fantasize about overthrowing Hart, only to accidentally kidnap him and run the office themselves, implementing fairer policies. As they cover up their scheme, chaos ensues, leading to unexpected empowerment and a triumphant stand against corporate misogyny.
