Monday Matinee “On the Waterfront” (1954)
Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Marlon Brando, On the Waterfront is a gritty drama about corruption, loyalty, and redemption among dockworkers in 1950s New York. Terry Malloy (Brando), a former boxer turned longshoreman, becomes entangled with a powerful mob boss, Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb), who controls the waterfront through intimidation and violence. When Terry unwittingly helps set up the murder of a fellow worker who planned to testify against the union’s corruption, he grapples with guilt and is drawn to the victim’s sister, Edie (Eva Marie Saint). With the urging of a priest (Karl Malden) and his conscience, Terry must decide whether to remain silent or risk everything to stand up against the brutal system exploiting the workers.
